Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Friday led a team of opposition figures, including former governors Aminu Tambuwal and Nasir El-Rufai, to visit former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna.
The visit, coming shortly after the Sallah celebrations, was shared in a video posted by Atiku on social media. In his post, the 2023 PDP presidential candidate described the meeting as light-hearted, noting that Buhari entertained the delegation with his trademark humor.
“As the Waziri Adamawa, I was obligated to be in Adamawa during the Sallah celebrations. Today, I had the opportunity to pay a post-Sallah visit to His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari. As usual, he cracked me up with his peculiar humour,” Atiku wrote.
The meeting has fueled speculations about a strategic political alignment ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Atiku, El-Rufai, and Labour Party leader Peter Obi recently announced a coalition under the “Concerned Leaders and Political Stakeholders” banner, aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the next election.
Following the announcement, Social Democratic Party (SDP) chieftain Prince Adewale Adebayo revealed ongoing talks with Atiku and Obi to join the SDP. He expressed confidence that if both leaders embrace the party’s ideology, they could unseat Tinubu and the APC.
Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), further hinted that El-Rufai could be Atiku’s fallback option in the SDP, should the PDP deny him its presidential ticket.
