Abbas Dissolves all Reps’ Ad Hoc Committees, Orders Immediate Halt to Activities

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has dissolved all ad hoc committees of the lower chamber with immediate effect.

The directive was conveyed in a letter issued by the Clerk of the House, Sidi Ibrahim, on Saturday and addressed to chairmen and members of the affected committees.

The clerk said the decision followed earlier directives asking the committees to conclude their assignments and submit their reports within the stipulated timeframe.

According to the directive, two ad hoc committees had sought extensions to complete their assignments, and the requests were granted a two-week grace period. However, the extension has now elapsed.

Ibrahim explained that ad hoc committees are temporary bodies established by the House to carry out specific and time-bound assignments and are not designed to operate indefinitely.

He cited Order 18, Rule 11, Paragraph 5 of the House Standing Orders, which sets limits for the submission of committee reports.

The directive stated that the continued existence of the committees had become untenable after exceeding the time allotted for their assignments.

Consequently, the dissolution took effect from Friday, August 28, 2026, with all activities being carried out in the name of the dissolved committees ordered to stop forthwith.

The affected committee chairmen were also directed to submit all outstanding reports, working documents, records and other materials relating to their assignments to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping.
