The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and Ahmadu Bello University have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish Nigeria’s first Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Hajj Operations Management, in a major step towards professionalising Hajj and Umrah administration in the country.
The agreement, signed on Friday at NAHCON headquarters in Abuja, is expected to replace traditional ad hoc operational practices with structured academic training and industry-driven expertise, while strengthening capacity development across Nigeria’s pilgrimage sector.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, NAHCON Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, said the increasing complexity of modern Hajj operations requires a new generation of professionals equipped with advanced knowledge in logistics, policy formulation, technology, pilgrim welfare and international coordination.
“Hajj operations have become increasingly sophisticated. This programme will produce professionals equipped with both academic knowledge and practical field experience to improve planning, coordination and service delivery for Nigerian pilgrims,” he said.
The agreement was signed on behalf of NAHCON by Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf and the Commission’s Secretary, Dr. Mustapha Muhammad Ali, while the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Adamu Ahmed, and the Registrar, Malam Rabiu Samaila, signed for the university.
Professor Ahmed described the initiative as the outcome of nearly a decade of engagement between both institutions, noting that the programme bridges the gap between academic excellence and practical industry experience.
He said graduates of the MBA would acquire the managerial skills required to address the evolving demands of Hajj and Umrah administration, not only in Nigeria but across the global pilgrimage ecosystem.
The programme will be jointly delivered by the Hajj Institute of Nigeria (HIN) and the ABU Distance Learning Centre, enabling participants from across the country to undertake the course through flexible learning arrangements.
It is designed for officials of NAHCON, State Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and Commissions, licensed Hajj and Umrah tour operators, professionals in travel, tourism and hospitality, religious scholars, entrepreneurs and graduates seeking careers in pilgrimage management.
The ABU delegation to the signing ceremony included Professor Mohammed Bashir Mu’azu, Director of the ABU Distance Learning Centre; Professor Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Advancement, Research and Innovation); Professor Auwalu Haruna, Director of the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance; and other senior academics.
NAHCON’s delegation featured the Rector of the Hajj Institute of Nigeria, Professor Nasiru Maiturare, alongside directors and members of the Commission’s senior management.
The initiative forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving efficiency, accountability and service delivery in Nigeria’s Hajj administration.
Stakeholders said the specialised MBA programme will create a sustainable pipeline of professionally trained personnel, strengthen institutional capacity and position Nigeria as a regional hub for Hajj education, training and research.
Admission requirements, application procedures and the commencement date for the programme are expected to be announced by Ahmadu Bello University in the coming weeks.
