CNS Receives NIM Fellowship, Stresses People-Centred Leadership

The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has been conferred with the Fellowship of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), in recognition of his contributions to professional leadership and service to Nigeria.

The conferment took place on Thursday, August 20, 2026, during an investiture ceremony themed, “Leading Through Transformation: The Human Element in Modern Leadership.”

Speaking at the occasion, Vice Admiral Abbas expressed appreciation to the Governing Council, management and members of the institute for the honour, describing the Fellowship as both a recognition and a renewed call to greater responsibility, continuous learning and service.

The CNS said the theme of the ceremony was particularly relevant in today’s rapidly changing environment, characterised by technological advancement, wider access to information and increasingly complex security and economic realities.

He noted that although technology and modern systems enhance organisational capabilities, people remain central to achieving meaningful and sustainable transformation.

According to him, the principle is particularly important in the Armed Forces, where ships, aircraft, weapons and other sophisticated platforms can only achieve their intended purposes when operated by trained, motivated and committed personnel.

He identified quality personnel and effective leadership as critical requirements for building a professional, motivated and mission-ready Nigerian Navy.

Vice Admiral Abbas further disclosed that his Command Philosophy places emphasis on accountability, professionalism and personnel welfare as key enablers of a highly professional and operationally effective Nigerian Navy committed to excellent service to the nation.

He stressed that effective leadership goes beyond directing personnel and managing resources, saying leaders must create the conditions for their people to understand the mission, take responsibility and remain inspired to give their best.

The CNS described the Fellowship as a reminder that leadership is a continuous journey of learning, reflection and service, adding that the recognition would further strengthen his commitment to professionalism, ethical leadership and service.

He also commended the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) for its enduring contributions to promoting sound management practices and developing leaders across the public and private sectors in support of national development.

The Fellowship was conferred on the CNS alongside the presentation of Merit Awards, Life Membership Awards and other Fellowships to distinguished personalities.

Vice Admiral Abbas reaffirmed the importance of purposeful leadership in building strong institutions, stressed that the true measure of leadership lies in the ability to leave people, institutions and the nation better than they were found.
