The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two babies abandoned in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.
The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, saying the incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, and that efforts were ongoing to identify the children’s mothers and family members.
The first incident occurred at about 5:30pm around Obodo Street, Kurudu, where a resident identified as Mr. Innocent heard the cry of a baby. Upon checking the area, he discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in cloth and abandoned inside a carton box.
Following the report, police officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care (JWC) Department, were promptly deployed to the scene and rescued the child.
The baby was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was confirmed to be in stable condition. After the necessary documentation, the child was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care, while investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment.
In a similar incident later the same day, at about 9:40pm, a resident of Gwagwalada, identified as Mr. Ibrahim, heard the cry of a baby outside his gate.
Upon inspection, he discovered a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned at the premises. Ibrahim, assisted by other concerned members of the community, immediately rescued the child and reported the matter at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15pm.
The baby girl was subsequently taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by personnel of the JWC Department for medical examination and is currently receiving care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Department.
Adeh said the Command appreciated the prompt intervention of Innocent, Ibrahim and other concerned community members in rescuing the babies and alerting the police.
She appealed to members of the public with any information that could assist in identifying the mothers or other family members of the abandoned babies to come forward and provide such information to the nearest police station.
