Illegal Miners Face Fresh Onslaught as Mining Marshals Step Up Enforcement

The Mining Marshals of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have intensified enforcement operations across the country as part of renewed efforts to curb illegal mining, strengthen compliance and improve regulatory oversight within Nigeria’s minerals sector.

The operations are aimed at ensuring that mining activities are conducted within approved regulatory frameworks and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s economic development.

Commander of the Mining Marshals, ACC Attah John Onoja, said the unit had recorded significant progress in its enforcement activities, particularly across the South-West region.

Onoja said the Mining Marshals had intensified monitoring of mining sites and were taking decisive action against operators found conducting mining activities outside approved regulatory requirements.

He warned individuals and companies involved in unauthorised mining activities to desist from violating established regulations, stressing that offenders would face the consequences of their actions.

The Commander maintained that ignorance of the law would not be accepted as an excuse for non-compliance, noting that operators in the mining sector were expected to obtain the necessary approvals and operate within the boundaries of the law.

The renewed enforcement drive underscores the Corps’ broader efforts to strengthen accountability in the minerals sector and ensure that Nigeria’s vast mineral resources are not exploited through activities that undermine national development.

The Mining Marshals reaffirmed their commitment to sustained enforcement, promotion of lawful mining practices and protection of the country’s mineral resources for sustainable economic growth.
