MURIC Faults Nigeria’s UNGA Position on Palestine, Netanyahu Speech

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has criticised Nigeria’s position at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), accusing the Federal Government of failing to adequately address the Palestinian question and declining to join countries that walked out during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address.

In a statement issued on Saturday, September 26, 2026, MURIC Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, described Nigeria’s conduct at the international gathering as “shocking, woeful, deplorable and despicable.”

Akintola said Nigeria failed to include the Palestinian question in its position paper at the UN General Assembly on Thursday, September 24, while the country’s delegation also declined to join 77 other countries that reportedly staged a walkout during Netanyahu’s speech.

The MURIC director linked the organisation’s criticism to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, citing casualties, injuries and widespread destruction in the Palestinian territory.

He also alleged that Palestinians had faced prolonged shortages of food, water, fuel and electricity, while homes, schools and medical facilities had suffered extensive damage.

MURIC further urged Nigerians who believe in justice and fairness to hold the Federal Government accountable over what it described as Nigeria’s handling of the Palestinian issue.

The organisation also called on Nigeria’s human rights community to speak out over the country’s position on Palestine.

The group’s statement come amid continued international debate over the Gaza conflict and the positions taken by countries at the UN General Assembly.
