The Nigerian Navy has recorded another breakthrough in the fight against smuggling as the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, in a joint operation with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), intercepted four boats conveying 518 bags of suspected smuggled parboiled rice along the Badagry waterways.
The Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore A. Adams-Aliu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, saying the operation was carried out on July 31, 2026, by the ship’s patrol team, acting on intelligence from the Headquarters Western Naval Command. The operation involved personnel of the NCS Western Marine Command and was supported by the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service.
Speaking on the operation, the Comptroller of the NCS Western Marine Command, Patrick Ntadi, said the interception followed credible intelligence that smugglers planned to move the consignment through the waterways.
According to him, Customs operatives encountered resistance while attempting to intercept the boats before naval personnel provided reinforcement that led to the successful arrest of the suspects and seizure of the cargo.
Ntadi said five boats carrying 518 bags of parboiled rice were intercepted, adding that no weapons were found during the operation. He commended the Nigerian Navy for its prompt support and expressed optimism that stronger inter-agency collaboration would further enhance efforts to combat smuggling.
The statement noted that the successful operation highlights the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to supporting national efforts to dismantle smuggling networks through effective collaboration with other security agencies.
It added that the operation was facilitated by sustained surveillance from the Western Regional Control Centre, FALCON EYE, demonstrating the Navy’s growing technological capability in maritime domain awareness and intelligence-driven operations.
According to the Navy, the achievement reflected the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to build a technologically advanced naval force capable of denying criminal elements freedom of action within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
The Navy also said the operation aligned with the directives of the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, to strengthen maritime security through intelligence-led operations, enhanced inter-agency cooperation and effective deployment of surveillance assets across the command’s area of responsibility.
NNS BEECROFT reaffirmed its resolve to sustain intelligence-driven operations and deepen collaboration with relevant security and law enforcement agencies to combat smuggling and other maritime crimes in support of Nigeria’s economic stability and national security.
