The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has urged the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) to strengthen compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, as both institutions pledged to deepen cooperation on data protection and capacity development.
The National Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, made the call when he led a delegation from the Commission on a courtesy visit to the Chairman/CEO of the NSIWC, Major General Junaid S. Bindawa (Rtd.), during which he outlined the evolution and expanding responsibilities of Nigeria’s data protection regulatory framework.
Olatunji explained that data protection regulation in Nigeria had evolved from the establishment of the former Bureau to the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which transformed the Bureau into a full-fledged Commission.
He said the rapid expansion of Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem had also reflected in the Commission’s revenue, which increased from ₦7 billion in 2025 to more than ₦12 billion in 2026.
The NDPC boss emphasised the importance of compliance with the NDP Act, urging the NSIWC to ensure full compliance with the law in the discharge of its responsibilities.
He also highlighted the growing global demand for skilled professionals in the emerging data protection ecosystem, stressing the need for equitable remuneration structures capable of attracting and retaining data protection experts within the public service.
As part of efforts to support the NSIWC’s compliance and capacity-building initiatives, Olatunji offered free data protection training for the Commission’s staff, alongside Virtual Privacy Academy (VPA) vouchers to enhance professional development.
In his response, Major General Bindawa (Rtd.) commended the NDPC National Commissioner/CEO and said the briefing had provided him with a clearer understanding of the Commission’s mandate.
He also commended the NDPC for its efforts to strengthen digital trust in Nigeria, noting that the NSIWC had already commenced steps towards compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
Bindawa welcomed the proposed training partnership and the provision of VPA vouchers, describing the initiatives as valuable to the capacity development of NSIWC personnel.
The visit ended with both institutions reaffirming their commitment to sustained cooperation and institutional collaboration in advancing data protection compliance and digital trust.
