The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is set to collaborate with Handle Pro Bono Link and Empowerment Foundation to strengthen access to justice for indigent and vulnerable Nigerians.
The proposed partnership was discussed when a delegation of the Foundation, led by its Founder, Christine Oboh, Esq., paid a visit to the Commission in Abuja.
The Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Chief Tony Ojukwu, was represented during the engagement by the Director, Legal Services and Enforcement, Mrs. Rabi Anwar.
The Foundation explained that it provides free legal representation to indigent persons in correctional facilities, including Kuje and Suleja, while also supporting beneficiaries with reintegration assistance after their release.
Receiving the delegation, Mrs. Anwar welcomed the initiative and expressed the Commission’s readiness to explore areas of collaboration that could improve access to justice for vulnerable persons.
She noted that the NHRC work with civil society organisations, the Legal Aid Council and other relevant stakeholders in addressing human rights complaints, conducting prison audits and supporting livelihood interventions for vulnerable Nigerians.
According to her, stronger institutional partnerships would help expand the reach of interventions aimed at protecting the rights of persons who may otherwise face barriers to justice.
The meeting ended with both organisations agreed to develop a clear framework for structured collaboration, with a view to strengthening legal assistance and human rights protection for indigent and vulnerable persons.
