NiDCOM Boss Celebrates Bolu Ogunyemi’s Election as First Black CMA President

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated Nigerian-born physician, Dr. Bolu Ogunyemi, on his election to lead the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), describing the achievement as a milestone for Nigerians in the Diaspora.

Ogunyemi’s election makes him the first Black physician to head the Canadian Medical Association, a development Dabiri-Erewa said highlights the capacity of Nigerians to excel and assume leadership positions in critical sectors across the world.

In a congratulatory message, the NiDCOM boss commended Ogunyemi for his contributions to clinical practice, medical education, healthcare administration and advocacy spanning more than 15 years.

Ogunyemi is a clinical associate professor of medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland and a practising dermatologist based in St. John’s, Canada. He also serves as a visiting specialist in Labrador City, where he has provided specialist medical services since 2018, particularly to underserved and remote communities.

Dabiri-Erewa praised his commitment to improving access to quality healthcare, noting that his service demonstrates the importance of ensuring that geographical location does not prevent people from accessing specialist medical attention.

She also highlighted his contributions to medical education through teaching and mentoring upcoming physicians, as well as his advocacy for reforms to address structural challenges within the Canadian healthcare system.

According to her, Ogunyemi’s professional journey exemplifies the contributions of Nigerians in the Diaspora to their host countries through professional excellence, community service, innovation, knowledge transfer and leadership.

Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to strengthening ties between Nigeria and its Diaspora, noting that the achievements of Nigerians abroad create opportunities for collaboration, investment, mentorship, knowledge exchange and national development.

She expressed confidence that Ogunyemi’s leadership of the Canadian Medical Association would contribute to constructive discussions and reforms addressing challenges in healthcare delivery in Canada and beyond.

The NiDCOM chief urged Nigerian professionals abroad to continue to uphold the values of excellence, integrity, service and innovation while maintaining strong connections with Nigeria and contributing to the country’s development through their respective fields of expertise.
