The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has celebrated Nigerian-born engineer, Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, on becoming the first Black woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Robotics from the University of Michigan.
In a statement signed by the Commission’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the achievement as a historic milestone and commended Dosunmu-Ogunbi for her brilliance, resilience and commitment to excellence.
Dabiri-Erewa said the feat is another testament to the outstanding contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora across diverse fields, noting that Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s success reinforces the Commission’s belief that Nigerians, wherever they reside, continue to distinguish themselves through innovation, hard work and academic excellence.
She said earning the highest academic qualification in the highly specialised field of robotics is not only a personal milestone but also an inspiration to countless young Nigerians, particularly girls and women aspiring to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The NiDCOM boss added that the achievement reflects positively on Nigeria and underscores the enormous potential of Nigerians making meaningful impacts around the world.
She reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to recognising and celebrating outstanding Nigerians in the diaspora whose achievements continue to elevate Nigeria’s image globally while encouraging stronger diaspora engagement in national development.
NiDCOM also urged young Nigerians to draw inspiration from Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s journey by embracing education, innovation and determination as pathways to achieving their aspirations.
