The Niger State Commissioner of Police, CP Abdullahi Adamu Elleman, has ordered a comprehensive and discreet investigation into an alleged assault and misconduct involving a senior police officer, ASP Yakubu Yusuf.
The investigation followed a petition submitted to the Commissioner by a Police Constable, PC Sabiu Saidu, serving with A Division, Kontagora, Niger State.
Saidu, with Force Number 554375, alleged in a petition dated September 9, 2026, that he was assaulted by ASP Yusuf while he was in police uniform and performing his official duties at the station.
Confirming the development, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the Commissioner had directed that the matter be discreetly investigated.
The PPRO, however, declined to comment further, saying the petition was already under investigation.
“Yes, a petition was addressed to the CP. I don’t want to speak on the matter for now,” Abiodun said.
The petition, titled “Petition Against AP/NO: 186206 ASP Yakubu Yusuf for Assaulting Me While in Police Uniform and on Official Duty,” detailed the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.
According to Saidu, the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on September 8, 2026, while he was carrying out his duties at the Station Guard of A Division, Kontagora.
He alleged that he was seated inside the security room at his duty post when ASP Yusuf’s daughter arrived and complained to his In-Charge that he was sitting in the room instead of performing his duties.
The woman allegedly demanded that Saidu be detained.
Saidu claimed that he responded by warning her that he would take action against her if she repeated the demand, after which she left the area.
Shortly afterwards, Saidu said Cpl Anas Garba approached him and informed him that ASP Yusuf had ordered him to report to his office.
He said he immediately complied and went to the senior officer’s office, where Yusuf allegedly confronted him over the remarks he had made to his daughter.
“Upon my arrival, ASP Yakubu Yusuf began shouting at me and asked me what I had told his daughter,” Saidu stated in the petition.
The constable alleged that before he could fully explain his side of the incident, ASP Yusuf slapped him twice.
“At the time of the incident, I was in police uniform and on official duty. After the assault, I left his office,” he alleged.
Saidu identified three police officers whom he said witnessed the alleged incident. They are Cpl Samari Enock, Force Number 518973; Cpl Anas Garba, Force Number 530558; and PC Ashar Auta, Force Number 559091.
Describing the allegation as serious, the constable appealed to the Commissioner of Police to order a full, impartial and independent investigation into the matter.
He urged the command to determine whether the alleged conduct violated the rules, regulations, disciplinary procedures and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
Saidu also requested that the three officers named as witnesses be invited to provide statements, while separate statements should be obtained from both himself and ASP Yusuf.
He further asked investigators to consider the relevant Police Rules and Regulations governing the conduct of officers and the treatment of subordinate personnel.
The constable requested appropriate disciplinary action if the allegation is established at the conclusion of the investigation.
He also appealed for protection against any possible intimidation, harassment, victimisation or further physical assault, and requested that the outcome of the investigation be communicated to him through the appropriate channel.
Saidu said the petition was submitted “respectfully and in good faith”, adding that his objective was to seek justice and ensure that the matter was handled in accordance with established rules and procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.
He further stated that he was willing to provide any additional statement or information that may be required by investigators.
