Nigeria at 66: Ikpeazu Seeks Stronger Nigeria-Spain Ties, Investment Partnerships

Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, has called for stronger bilateral relations and expanded investment partnerships between Nigeria and Spain as the two countries explore opportunities for cooperation in key sectors of their economies.

Ikpeazu made the call in Madrid during his address to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, where he reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic relations with Spain.

The ambassador identified renewable energy, infrastructure, agriculture, technology, education, trade and the creative industries as areas with significant potential for increased collaboration between both countries.

He noted that Nigeria-Spain relations were built on mutual respect, constructive dialogue and growing cooperation, expressing confidence that stronger partnerships would deliver shared economic benefits.

According to him, Spanish companies, including GB Foods, continue to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s dynamic market, while Nigerians living in Spain contribute meaningfully to the country’s social and economic development.

The envoy said Nigeria valued Spain’s partnership and remained committed to creating an enabling environment for investment, including business-to-business matchmaking initiatives designed to connect investors and enterprises from both countries.

Congratulating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians at home and in the diaspora on the anniversary, Ikpeazu described the occasion as an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey since independence on October 1, 1960, and renew commitment to national unity, freedom, progress and dignity.

He paid tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers, nationalists and patriots whose courage and sacrifices secured the country’s independence, stressing that nation-building remained a continuous process requiring resilience, innovation and collective responsibility.

The ambassador described Nigeria as Africa’s most populous country and one of its largest economies, with abundant human talent, cultural diversity and natural resources. He also highlighted the country’s democratic institutions, vibrant youth population and contributions to peace, security and development across Africa and beyond.

Addressing Nigerians resident in Spain, including students, professionals and entrepreneurs, Ikpeazu described them as valuable ambassadors whose conduct, achievements and contributions help strengthen relations between the two countries.

He urged members of the Nigerian community to remain united, law-abiding and committed to upholding the country’s reputation through integrity, enterprise, innovation and resilience.

On Nigeria’s economic outlook, the ambassador acknowledged the country’s prevailing economic challenges but expressed confidence in ongoing reforms aimed at economic diversification, improved governance and inclusive growth.

He said the government remained determined to harness the creativity of Nigerians, particularly the youth, and the country’s diverse resources to build a more prosperous and secure future.

Ikpeazu emphasised that the support and friendship of international partners, including Spain, would remain important to Nigeria’s development aspirations.

As Nigeria celebrates 66 years of independence, he called on citizens to renew their commitment to building a peaceful, prosperous and respected nation, while strengthening partnerships that promote economic growth and international cooperation.

He concluded by wishing both Nigeria and Spain continued peace, progress and prosperity.
