The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of two of its senior officers, retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Adeleke Taiwo Olatunde and Commissioner of Police (CP) Hassan Saleh Gwani, describing their deaths as a great loss to the Force and the nation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the Police said AIG Olatunde died at his residence in Lagos on July 23, 2026, while CP Gwani passed away on July 19, 2026, at the Saudi German Hospital in Cairo, Egypt, after a brief illness.
According to the statement, both officers served the Nigeria Police Force with dedication, professionalism and unwavering commitment to public safety for nearly three decades.
The Force noted that AIG Olatunde joined the Police as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992, and built an illustrious career spanning more than 33 years. During his service, he held several strategic command and operational positions in Abia, Lagos, Osun and Benue State Commands, as well as at the Force Headquarters.
Among his notable appointments were Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ikire; Assistant Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Operations at the Western Port Authority, Lagos; Commander of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Headquarters; and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations. He retired honourably from the Force on November 3, 2025. He is survived by his wife and children.
The statement also paid tribute to CP Hassan Saleh Gwani, a native of Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area of Gombe State, who was born on November 11, 1970, and enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on November 10, 1997.
The Force said CP Gwani served in several strategic capacities during his career, earning respect for his dedication and commitment to duty. Following his demise in Cairo, he was laid to rest in Egypt in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Inspector-General of Police and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends and colleagues of the late officers, describing them as exemplary policemen whose contributions to national security and public service would remain enduring.
The Force prayed for Almighty God to grant the departed officers eternal rest and comfort their families with the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
