The Nigerian Navy has rescued two 16-year-old teenagers from drowning following a boat mishap in Egweama Community, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The rescue operation was carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO on July 28, 2026, after the teenagers’ wooden boat capsized while they were returning from a routine trip along the community waterways.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the boat overturned due to adverse water conditions, leaving the two boys stranded and at risk of drowning.
The statement said naval personnel, who spotted the distressed teenagers, responded swiftly and successfully rescued them before evacuating them to safety. The victims were subsequently given necessary assistance and medical attention to assess their condition.
The Navy said the successful rescue demonstrated the professionalism and operational readiness of its personnel in protecting lives within Nigeria’s maritime environment.
It added that the operation underscored the Service’s unwavering commitment to maritime safety, search and rescue missions, and the protection of lives in coastal and riverine communities.
The Nigerian Navy also noted that the rescue highlighted its continued efforts to strengthen relationships with host communities through responsive and people-centred operations.
Reaffirming its mandate, the Service pledged to continue ensuring the safety of legitimate users of Nigeria’s waterways while sustaining efforts to secure the nation’s maritime domain.
