Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Portuguese Republic, Erelu Angela Adebayo, has formally commenced her diplomatic assignment in Portugal following the presentation of her Letters of Credence to President António José Seguro.
The ceremony, held on Monday, 27 July 2026, at the historic Belém Palace in Lisbon, marked the official beginning of Ambassador Adebayo’s mission and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Portugal.
During the audience with President Seguro, Ambassador Adebayo conveyed the goodwill and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the Government and people of Nigeria, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Portugal.
She highlighted key areas of cooperation, including trade and investment, maritime security, energy, agriculture, education, cultural exchange, tourism, and multilateral engagement.
The Nigerian envoy also emphasised the importance of economic diplomacy and stronger collaboration on shared global priorities such as peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, and the Africa–European Union Partnership.
President Seguro welcomed Ambassador Adebayo and expressed Portugal’s commitment to strengthening relations with Nigeria, acknowledging the country’s strategic importance in Africa and its role as a key partner in fostering stronger Africa-Europe cooperation.
Ambassador Adebayo assured the Portuguese Government, diplomatic community, private sector, and Nigerians living in Portugal of her commitment to building on existing ties and expanding mutually beneficial partnerships between both nations.
The Nigerian Embassy in Lisbon said it remains dedicated to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives while promoting stronger political, economic, cultural, and people-to-people relations between Nigeria and Portugal.
