NIS, IOM Review Border Management Strategy Ahead of 2027–2031 Policy Cycle

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and with support from the European Union (EU), has concluded a top management workshop to review Nigeria’s National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) and its Action Plan ahead of the 2027–2031 policy cycle.

The workshop, held at Zuma Rock Resort, Niger State, from September 27 to 30, 2026, focused on reviewing the 2019–2023 strategy and identifying key priorities for strengthening Nigeria’s border management framework. The Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

The engagement provided a strategic platform for NIS top management and its partners to assess progress, exchange perspectives and develop recommendations to guide the next phase of the country’s border management policy.

Speaking at the workshop, the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, KN Nandap, stressed the need for the revised strategy to be anchored on credible migration data, effective implementation mechanisms and sustained inter-agency collaboration.

Nandap noted that the review must produce a clear and actionable framework capable of addressing emerging border management and security challenges while positioning Nigeria to provide leadership in integrated border management across Africa.

The workshop featured strategic discussions, technical sessions and group presentations, followed by the consolidation of review outcomes.

An NIS Executive Management Endorsement Session was also held to review and endorse key recommendations, prioritise interventions, consider financing options and validate the proposed strategic direction for the 2027–2031 policy cycle.

The review is expected to provide a foundation for improving inter-agency coordination, strengthening the implementation of border management policies and enhancing Nigeria’s response to evolving security and migration challenges.

The workshop further reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Immigration Service and its partners to sustained collaboration and continuous improvement in border management.
