The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has projected Nigeria’s border security priorities at a major international migration forum in China, reinforced the country’s commitment to stronger global cooperation against irregular migration, document fraud and transnational organised crime.
The Service participated in the Sub-Forum on Migration Management Cooperation, held in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, China, from September 8 to 11, 2026, alongside more than 2,000 participants drawn from 139 countries and organisations.
A key highlight of the engagement was a bilateral meeting between the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap, and officials of the National Immigration Administration of China on September 9.
The meeting focused on issues of mutual interest and explored opportunities for deeper cooperation between the two immigration authorities, particularly in the areas of technical exchanges, information sharing and capacity building.
The forum provided an international platform for participating countries to share migration policy initiatives and examine collective strategies for tackling irregular migration and transnational organised crime.
Discussions also centred on the growing role of technology in modern migration management, with parallel sessions addressing Smart Digital Services and Administration for Foreigners and Advancing Document Verification, Technology and Intelligence Sharing for Secure Borders.
Nigeria actively participated in the latter session, where the NIS contributed to a roundtable on the country’s efforts to combat document fraud and falsification of records.
The Service highlighted measures being undertaken to strengthen document verification and border security, while emphasising the importance of technology, intelligence sharing and international cooperation in confronting increasingly sophisticated cross-border threats.
The engagement with China and other participating countries further reinforced the NIS’s drive to expand international partnerships and leverage global best practices in migration and border management.
The Nigeria Immigration Service reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international partnerships, intelligence sharing and technical cooperation to promote secure borders and effective migration management.
The Service maintained that sustained collaboration among immigration authorities and other international partners remains essential to addressing irregular migration, document fraud, transnational organised crime and other emerging challenges in border security.
