The Niger State Government has alerted residents and communities along the Kaduna River Basin to the possibility of rising water levels following increased inflows into the Shiroro Reservoir.
The warning was contained in a release signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Obed Nuhu Nana, following a notification from North South Power Company Limited (NSPCL), operators of the Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Plant.

According to the state government, recent hydrological observations indicated improved inflows into the River Kaduna catchment and the Shiroro Reservoir, with high inflows expected to continue during the rainy season in line with the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).
The government said the continued rise in reservoir inflows may necessitate a controlled release of water from the Shiroro Reservoir in September 2026 to enhance the safety of the dam structure and downstream communities.
Residents within the Kaduna River Basin were consequently advised to remain vigilant and exercise utmost caution throughout the remainder of the rainy season.
Farmers cultivating along the River Kaduna floodplain were particularly urged to exercise caution, while fishermen, boat operators and others involved in water-based activities were advised to take extra precautions.
The government also warned residents against unnecessary exposure to river channels and floodplains, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
Community leaders were urged to promptly disseminate the advisory to residents within their communities and encourage them to pay close attention to further official updates from the government and relevant authorities.
The government, however, urged residents not to panic, stressing the need for vigilance and appropriate precautionary measures to protect lives, property and livelihoods.
It said the Niger State Government, in collaboration with relevant agencies and stakeholders, would continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as necessary.
Residents were urged to treat the advisory with the seriousness it deserves and cooperate with relevant authorities throughout the remaining days of September 2026.
