TCN Faults EKEDP Feeders, Rejects Claim of T11 Transformer Outage

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disputed a publication by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) concerning the outage at the Lekki Transmission Substation, saying the incident was caused by faults on EKEDP’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.

TCN, in a statement issued on Thursday, said contrary to EKEDP’s claim that its T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly and was awaiting inspection, the incident occurred at about 4:34am on August 26, 2026, when the Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders simultaneously tripped due to overcurrent and earth fault.

According to the transmission company, the feeder fault resulted in the inter-tripping of the primary and secondary breakers of its TR1 60MVA, 132/33kV transformer, accompanied by a heavy bang and smoke.

TCN said its maintenance crew responded promptly, rehabilitated the damaged secondary breaker and restored both the primary and secondary breakers later the same day.

However, it explained that another trip occurred when EKEDP attempted to close its Oniru feeder on trial, following the recurrence of the same relay indications.

The company said further corrective work was therefore required to address the fault and restore supply.

TCN stressed that there was no outage on its T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDP, insisting that the incident was strictly related to faults on the electricity distribution company’s Oniru and Agungi 33kV feeders.

“TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.

The transmission company apologised to electricity customers affected by the incident and assured them that efforts were ongoing to resolve the fault.

TCN also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the transmission network and putting in place a more robust system to improve the reliability of electricity supply.
