YPP Candidate Unveils Agenda for AMAC/Bwari, Pledges Rent Regulation, Town Halls

The Young Progressive Party (YPP) House of Representatives candidate for AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency of the Federal Capital Territory, Hon. Young Ugochukwu, has unveiled an agenda focused on legislative accountability, youth inclusion, rent regulation and greater engagement with constituents ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ugochukwu disclosed the agenda on Wednesday while responding to questions from members of the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) at the association’s secretariat in EFAB Extension, Area 11, Garki, Abuja.

The candidate said his decision to enter politics was driven by his understanding of the legislature’s role in strengthening democracy and providing effective checks on the activities of the executive.

He explained that he had previously stayed away from politics because he believed political activities did not directly concern him, but later realised that citizens who remained disengaged could leave future generations to bear the consequences of poor governance.

Ugochukwu said effective legislative oversight required lawmakers to critically scrutinise government policies and proposals rather than simply accepting whatever was presented by the executive.

He said his legislative agenda would be guided by the needs identified by constituents rather than personal priorities, proposing quarterly town hall meetings where residents would deliberate on their challenges and determine projects and issues they wanted him to pursue at the National Assembly.

“The people’s agenda is my agenda, and I am contesting this election to make a difference,” he said.

On housing, the YPP candidate promised to advocate legislation aimed at regulating rent increases and agency charges, while also providing pro-bono legal assistance through his foundation to residents facing unlawful or excessive eviction-related challenges.

He acknowledged that any legislative effort to regulate rents in the FCT would require engagement with other lawmakers, given the role of the National Assembly in legislation affecting the federal capital.

Ugochukwu also identified youth empowerment and political participation as key components of his proposed representation, saying he would support initiatives aimed at educating young Nigerians about the political process and encouraging greater youth participation in elections and elective office.

On security, he disclosed that his team was exploring technological solutions to the “one-chance” robbery menace in the FCT, particularly technology that could enable commuters to identify and track vehicles.

He further pledged to advocate improvements in healthcare and education through appropriate constituency interventions, while stressing that lawmakers should not take personal credit for projects funded through government allocations.

Ugochukwu, a businessman from Anambra State who said he had lived in the FCT for more than 15 years, has interests in hospitality, construction, real estate, automobiles and logistics.

He said his business experience had shaped his emphasis on accountability, accessibility and digital engagement in public representation.

The YPP candidate identified accountability as one of Nigeria’s major governance challenges, arguing that public officials should be held responsible for their actions and decisions.

He also said he would not depend on a political godfather if elected, maintaining that his loyalty would be to the electorate.

Ugochukwu urged voters to consider candidates offering different approaches to governance, describing his campaign message as an appeal to “try something different.”

He promised to maintain regular communication with constituents if elected and said he would prioritise issues raised by residents of the constituency.

He also pledged that he would not remain in office merely to retain political power if he could no longer effectively serve the people.
