In a bid to make an immediate impact in the education sector, Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, has commenced the renovation and reconstruction of 100 schools across the state to commemorate his first 100 days in office.
The Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mrs. Onomen Goodness Briggs, disclosed this while inspecting some of the ongoing projects. She urged communities, parents, and residents to help prevent vandalism of school facilities, noting that Governor Okpebholo has included perimeter fencing in the renovation plans to enhance security.
During her visit to schools in Oredo and Egor local government areas, including Ebo Primary School, Ore-Oghene Primary School, Evbareke Junior Secondary School, Use Junior Secondary School, and Okhekhugbo Primary School, Briggs assured that the projects would be completed within one to three weeks.
“Security is a major concern, and we must involve the communities in safeguarding these facilities. If vandalism continues, the children will suffer the most,” she said.
She further explained that the renovation includes furnishing, with new chairs and tables already part of the project.
“You can’t put new furniture in a dilapidated building. The structures must be in good condition before we furnish them,” she added.
Briggs also confirmed that the renovation projects are spread across Edo South, Edo Central, and Edo North, with inspections continuing throughout the week.
Meanwhile, it was observed that many of the schools visited face serious challenges, including overcrowded classrooms with up to 200 students and a lack of furniture, forcing many pupils to sit on the floor.
Governor Okpebholo’s initiative aimed to tackle these issues, ensuring a better learning environment for students in Edo State.
