2009 Agreement: ASUU Branches meet over NEC resolutions, next line of action looms

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed its branches nationwide to convene congresses to deliberate on the outcome of its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja.

ASUU President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, said branch chairpersons who attended the NEC meeting have returned to brief their members before any public announcement is made.

“Our procedure is that once there is a NEC meeting, branch chairpersons will go back and brief their members on the outcome. We can only go public after our members have received briefing from their branches,” he explained.

The union had earlier announced plans to stage rallies across public universities to protest the Federal Government’s failure to renegotiate the 2009 agreement. It also warned that it would take further steps if its demands were not met by August 28, hinting at the possibility of industrial action.

Prof. Piwuna stressed that the union’s next line of action would be made public after all branches hold their congresses and brief members accordingly.
