The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for continuity in governance beyond 2027, urged the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to support the re-election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and ensure the return of experienced lawmakers to the National Assembly.
Speaking at the APC National Convention in Abuja on Friday, Abbas stressed that ongoing reforms under the Tinubu administration require sustained effort and should not be interrupted. He described the administration’s agenda as a long-term commitment rather than a short-term project, insisting that continuity is essential to achieving meaningful results.
According to the Speaker, limiting continuity to the executive arm alone would be insufficient, as the legislature plays a critical role in lawmaking, oversight, and policy implementation. He warned that the frequent turnover of senators and members of the House has negatively impacted governance, citing the loss of institutional memory, disruption of legislative momentum, and increased public spending on training new lawmakers.
Abbas therefore urged the party to adopt deliberate measures to retain “committed and performing legislators,” noting that stability in the National Assembly is crucial to sustaining reforms and ensuring policy consistency.
He further described continuity as “the discipline of progress,” cautioning against abrupt shifts in direction that could undermine ongoing efforts. He called on party members to translate political strength into tangible results, emphasizing unity, coordination, and accountability across all levels of leadership.
Highlighting the North-West as a stronghold of the APC, the Speaker said the region remains united and committed to delivering electoral support for the party. He, however, noted that such strength comes with responsibility, urging party leaders to consolidate gains and expand their reach.
Addressing members of the newly constituted National Working Committee (NWC), Abbas charged them to manage the party’s growing size and diversity with discipline and strategic engagement. He warned against internal divisions, stressing the need for inclusive leadership and effective coordination.
While acknowledging that the road ahead would require sacrifice and discipline, the Speaker expressed confidence that consistency and commitment would yield lasting rewards, urged party stakeholders to remain focused on building a stable and progressive future.
