2027: Kano former federal lawmakers back Tinubu’s second term, endorse Barau for Kano Governorship

Former federal lawmakers from Kano State have formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office and the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, as their preferred candidate for the Kano State governorship ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement was announced on Friday during a courtesy visit by members of the Forum of Former Federal Lawmakers from Kano State to Senator Barau in Abuja. The forum comprises legislators who served during the Second, Third and Fourth Republics.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Hon. Umar Sadiq, who represented Kumbotso Federal Constituency between 1979 and 1983, said the decision to support President Tinubu and Senator Barau was unanimously reached by all members of the forum. He disclosed that the group would mobilise its political structures to ensure the success of Tinubu’s re-election bid and Barau’s governorship ambition.

According to the Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on Media and Publicity, Malam Ismail Mudashir, Hon. Sadiq described Senator Barau as the sole candidate endorsed by the forum for the Kano governorship.

“This is the second time we are endorsing Senator Barau for the governorship of our state. He is a member of our forum and number one on our membership list. We have also endorsed President Tinubu for a second term. We have no other candidate apart from Senator Barau. By the grace of Allah, he is the next governor of Kano State,” he said.

He added that Senator Barau’s performance and leadership track record justified the forum’s confidence in his capacity to lead Kano State, urging him to sustain his developmental efforts.

Also speaking, Hon. Idris Isah (Jollof), a former member of the House of Representatives, described Senator Barau as a blessing to Kano State and the All Progressives Congress (APC), noted that the stability and growth of the party in the state were largely attributable to his leadership.

“We are here to reaffirm our endorsement for you and President Tinubu for a second term. Senator Barau is a blessing to the people of Kano, especially to us as APC members,” he said.

In a similar vein, Hon. Faruk Lawan, who represented Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency for 16 years, assured that members of the forum would work tirelessly to secure victory for both President Tinubu and Senator Barau in the 2027 elections.

The meeting was also attended by the Chief of Staff to the National Chairman of the APC, Hon. Mustapha Bala Dawaki, who is a member of the forum.

Responding, Senator Barau thanked the former lawmakers for their support, describing them as the backbone of Kano politics. He said their endorsement aligned with a collective resolve to rescue the state from poor governance.

“This is a rescue mission. Kano State has suffered from failure of leadership and is being run like a private enterprise. We will not sit idly by and allow this situation to continue. This is not about personal interest; it is about the future of our state. We must work together to reverse the decline and ensure that resources are used for the benefit of all,” he said.
