Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has declared unwavering loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating emphatically that he would accept any role assigned to him by the President ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Senator Barau made this known on Wednesday while addressing journalists during a press briefing on the forthcoming zonal public hearings of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review.
Responding to speculations and calls from various groups urging him to serve as President Tinubu’s running mate in 2027, Barau said:
“Whatever Mr. President asks me to do, I will do it 100%. He is my political father, and I am very loyal to him.”
The Kano-born lawmaker described the conversation around the 2027 elections as premature, stressing that focus should remain on supporting the President to succeed in governance.
“Honestly, I don’t want to say anything about that now. Mr. President has been working tirelessly to reset the trajectory of this nation for prosperity. Instead of wasting energy on 2027 speculation, Nigerians should channel resources toward supporting him,” Barau stated.
He praised President Tinubu’s leadership style, describing him as open-minded and kind-hearted, and recalled the President’s intervention in the political crisis that secured his Senate ticket and eventual emergence as Deputy Senate President.
“When we had issues in Kano, he resolved them. He made it possible for me to get the Senate ticket in 2023 and supported me to become Deputy Senate President,” he said.
Barau added,“So, if the time comes and he says, ‘I want you to work with me,’ I will say, ‘Thank you, sir,’ and I will do it.”
He emphasized his strong belief in the progressive ideology shared with President Tinubu, affirming,
“I’m a progressive to the core. We cherish loyalty. I’m 100% loyal to Mr. President.”
Meanwhile, Senator Barau also revealed that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review is currently considering 59 bills and 31 proposals. He disclosed that public hearings will be held across all six geopolitical zones to gather additional input from Nigerians. He said the hearings will be chaired by principal officers of the Senate representing each zone, with the aim of receiving memoranda and suggestions from citizens to shape the future of the Nigerian Constitution.
