The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has commended the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for surpassing its revenue target for the first quarter of 2025. He gave the commendation while chairing the 62nd regular meeting of the NCS Board held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the Service’s Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.
The statutory meeting provided an opportunity to evaluate the Service’s operational performance, fiscal contributions, and progress on reform initiatives.
According to figures presented at the meeting, the NCS recorded a landmark ₦1.75 trillion in revenue during the first quarter of the year exceeding its projected target by ₦106.5 billion and representing a 30 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Minister Edun described the performance as commendable, added that the feat demonstrated the Service’s growing efficiency and relevance in Nigeria’s revenue framework. He however emphasised the need for continuous improvement to meet the country’s economic aspirations.
“As is expected and required, there is an improvement in the revenue of the Service, which is slightly above what was budgeted for the first quarter. However, much more is required, and more is expected of an institution that is pivotal in revenue,” he stated.
He further stressed the importance of good governance and regular board engagements in strengthening transparency, accountability, and service delivery.
“It was a good meeting. It’s important that we maintain corporate governance oversight and consultation through these regular statutory meetings. At the end of the day, we will always ask that we do more to improve the revenue and the Service’s operations to aid the Nigerian economy and serve the good people of Nigeria.”
During the meeting, the board reviewed ongoing modernisation efforts, including the expansion of the B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System (UCMS), the implementation of the Authorised Economic Operators (AEO) programme, and enhanced anti-smuggling operations.
These reforms are aimed at boosting trade facilitation, improving customs processes, and reinforcing national security objectives.
The 62nd board meeting reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to empowering key revenue-generating agencies like the NCS to drive economic stability and long-term growth.
