The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone XI Headquarters, Osogbo, AIG Emuobo Fred Ekokotu, has warned Nigerians to always verify the authenticity of legal practitioners before engaging their services.
He gave the warning on Friday, August 29, 2025, while parading a fake lawyer arrested by operatives of the X-Squad Section, led by ACP Akinloye Oyegade.
The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Odeh, had allegedly posed as a qualified attorney for almost 10 years, defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians through false claims of legal representation, estate agency, and public consultancy. He reportedly operated offices in Lagos and Abuja.
According to ACP Oyegade, Odeh was arrested on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at a court premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while appearing as a legal representative for an unsuspecting client. Investigations revealed that he operated under the name A.O. Emmanuel, Legal Practitioner and Public Consultant.
The arrest followed a discreet investigation launched after a victim petitioned the police, suspecting foul play.
“This case underscores the dangers of dealing with unverified legal practitioners,” AIG Ekokotu said, stressing the risks of financial loss, inadequate legal representation, compromised cases, and reputational damage.
The police noted that the suspect will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations, while urging Nigerians to remain vigilant against impostors exploiting public trust for personal gain.
