The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has formally engaged former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on the future of Muslims in Nigeria under his prospective government.
The faith-based advocacy group, led by Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola, highlighted that Nigeria’s political and administrative structures, rooted in Christian colonial heritage, have historically denied Muslims equal rights. MURIC noted that many Muslim politicians are unaware of these disparities or are pressured into compliance, and urged Atiku to address the issues “clinically and objectively.”
In its communication, MURIC stressed that its demands focus on proportionate representation, equal rights, and freedom of religion. The group also called for recognition of the first day of the Islamic New Year as a public holiday and resolution of issues like the Friday Question.
Professor Akintola emphasized that the engagement aims to ensure justice for both Muslims and Christians, noted that qualified Muslim leaders are ready to contribute meaningfully if included in governance. The group invited Atiku to respond publicly or through direct dialogue.
