The Abuja Muslim Forum (AMF) has called for the development of a comprehensive national blueprint to address the persistent social challenges posed by the Almajiri and Baban-bola systems in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and beyond.
This appeal was made by the Amir of the Forum, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Ajani, during the 1447 Hijrah Anniversary Public Lecture held on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at the Conference Hall of the Abuja National Mosque.
In his welcome address, Alhaji Ajani expressed concern over the growing menace of Almajiri children and scavengers (Baban-bola), described it as a source of crime, drug abuse, and other societal distortions. He urged educationists, economists, Islamic scholars, and other stakeholders to join efforts in crafting practical, short, medium, and long-term strategies to address the problem holistically.
“I have been challenged to come up with a blueprint on how to curb this menace,” the Amir said. “I am equally passing the challenge to this gathering. We must rise to this responsibility for the sake of our communities and future generations.”
Alhaji Ajani also highlighted some of the Forum’s achievements over the past 34 years, including its work in rural da’awah, economic empowerment, and Islamic financial interventions through zakat, sadaqah, and most recently, Waqf. He announced that the Forum had recently restructured its Board of Trustees under the leadership of Alhaji Mahmud Yayale Ahmed, CFR (Ajiyan Katagum), and has presented a 10-year programme (2024–2034), with the construction of a world-class Islamic Centre/Secretariat as a top priority.
The event, themed “Hijrah: A Lesson in Patience, Perseverance and Enduring Legacies,” featured renowned Islamic scholar, Professor Salisu Shehu, as the Guest Speaker.
Dignitaries present at the occasion included the Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, who served as Special Guest of Honour; the Chairman of the Occasion, Arch. Bukar Abubakar; the Royal Father of the Day, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Ibrahim Usman Jibril, CON, Emir of Nasarawa; and the Mother of the Day, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Alhaji Ajani commended members of the Executive Council of the Forum for their unwavering support and resilience, especially in the face of current national challenges. He concluded by praying for Allah’s reward for all who have contributed to the success of the Forum’s activities.
