President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on his victory at the Supreme Court which affirmed him as the duly elected governor following the September 2024 gubernatorial election.
In a personally signed congratulatory message, Senator Akpabio described the verdict as a triumph of democracy and a validation of the wishes of the people of Edo State.
“What the apex court in the land has done is to affirm the will and wishes of the overwhelming majority of the people of Edo State. It shows that the election was transparent, free and fair,” Akpabio stated.
He further noted that the decision of the Supreme Court, which dismissed the petition by Mr. Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reaffirmed the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and underscores the importance of grassroots political engagement.
“The declaration by the Supreme Court in favour of Senator Okpebholo as the legitimately and constitutionally elected governor of Edo State proves that elections are won at the ballot by people who connect with the grassroots,” he added.
Senator Akpabio commended the people of Edo State for their choice and expressed confidence in Governor Okpebholo’s leadership.
“This milestone affirms Governor Okpebholo’s mandate and paves the way for him to continue delivering exceptional service to the good people of Edo State. He has done well in the past seven months, and I believe he will do even more in the years ahead.”
The Senate President concluded by assuring Governor Okpebholo of the Senate’s support and partnership in advancing the development of Edo State.
“On behalf of my family, constituents, and the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I extend my warmest congratulations to you and the wonderful people of Edo State on this landmark victory. I look forward to a robust working relationship with you.”
