The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has challenged Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, to present concrete evidence backing her sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
At a press conference held Tuesday at Arewa House, Kaduna, and addressed by its National President, Isah Abubakar, the group described the allegations as grave and capable of eroding public trust in Nigeria’s democratic institutions if not properly addressed.
“Today, we, the members of the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria, stand before you and the public to address a matter of grave concern that has captured the attention of our nation.
“Allegations of this nature not only impact the individuals involved but also have far-reaching implications for the integrity of the National Assembly and our democracy.”Abubakar stated.
The group emphasized the need for truth and justice in handling such sensitive matters, cautioning against the dangers of unproven accusations.
“In light of these allegations, we respectfully request that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan provide concrete evidence to substantiate her claims against Senator Akpabio,” Abubakar said. “Unsubstantiated claims can lead to irreversible reputational damage and erode trust in political institutions.”
While affirming its support for victims of harassment, the NYCN maintained that due process must prevail.
“We recognize the importance of listening to victims, but we also insist that any accusation must be grounded in verifiable evidence to avoid miscarriage of justice,” Abubakar added.
The youth group warned that failure to provide evidence or take clear action could result in mass mobilization.
“If evidence is not provided or appropriate steps taken, we will have no choice but to organize protests to demand accountability and protect the credibility of our political system,” the NYCN declared.
The group concluded by calling for responsible leadership and transparency to restore public confidence in governance.
