Akpabio pays glowing tribute to late Senator Ezea at valedictory session

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, on Tuesday led members of the upper legislative chamber in paying glowing tributes to the late Senator Okechukwu “Okey” Ezea during a valedictory plenary held in his honour.

Akpabio described the late lawmaker as a dedicated patriot, committed public servant, and faithful servant of the Republic whose life was defined by duty, integrity, and selfless service to Nigeria.

Delivering an emotional eulogy titled “A Death in the Family,” the Senate President said the death of Senator Ezea had created a deep void in the National Assembly, noting that the loss transcended political and party affiliations.

According to him, the late Senator was driven by a firm belief in Nigeria’s future and worked tirelessly to strengthen democratic institutions and promote good governance.

“He was not merely a Senator, but a brother and a friend, who believed in the dignity of public service and the nobility of nation-building,” Akpabio said.

He recalled that Senator Ezea served with distinction as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing and made significant contributions across other committee assignments, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

The Senate President noted that the late lawmaker approached his legislative duties with calmness, discipline, and unwavering loyalty to the Constitution, adding that his politics was rooted in purpose rather than personal ambition.

Akpabio further commended Ezea’s commitment to the welfare of his constituents, particularly through empowerment initiatives and community development programmes aimed at improving livelihoods.

While mourning his passing, the Senate President said lawmakers were comforted by the enduring legacy of service he left behind, stressing that Nigeria was poorer for his departure but richer for his exemplary life.

On behalf of the Senate and the National Assembly, Akpabio extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his constituents, and associates, praying for God’s comfort and strength for them in their time of grief.

He urged lawmakers to emulate the virtues of integrity, sacrifice, and patriotism which Senator Ezea embodied throughout his public life.

The valedictory session ended with prayers for the peaceful repose of the late Senator’s soul and a renewed commitment by members to place national interest above personal considerations.
