Senate President Godswill Akpabio has attributed his rise in Nigeria’s political landscape to divine grace, saying his journey from obscurity to becoming the nation’s number-three citizen is proof that God lifts whom He chooses.
Akpabio spoke at the blessing and official opening of the Regina Coeli Parish Rectory in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, an event attended by senior clergy, top political figures, and dignitaries. His remarks were contained in a statement issued by his media aide, Jackson Udom.
Reflecting on his political trajectory, the Senate President said God had been preparing him for national leadership long before he became aware of it.
“As the most-ranked Christian in government today, I firmly believe that God has been preparing me for the responsibilities before me,” he said. “I belong to all denominations, but I am proud to be a Catholic. My journey is simply a testimony of God’s goodness.”
Akpabio stated that his life should serve as an encouragement to Nigerians who may feel limited by circumstance, background, or social status.
“If God can raise me from a nobody to become Senate President, then He can do it for any Nigerian,” he said. “All we must do is prepare ourselves, remain faithful, and position our lives for His blessings.”
The Senate President urged Nigerians to contribute to faith-based projects, saying even the smallest donation carried spiritual value.
“Anytime you give.even 10 kobo to a church project, and it is completed and put to use, know that God has accepted your offering,” he noted.
Akpabio also disclosed plans to commission a new worship centre at the National Assembly to strengthen spiritual life within the legislature.
“In the coming weeks, I will invite Nigerians from all walks of life to join us in dedicating a befitting place of worship for our God,” he announced.
The Catholic Bishop of Uyo, Most Rev. John Ayah, praised Akpabio and his wife, Dr. Unoma Akpabio, for their consistent support for the Church. He recalled that the couple had hosted Catholic bishops across Nigeria during the September episcopal gathering in Ikot Ekpene.
Bishop Ayah urged the Senate President to remain focused despite criticism from political opponents.
“You are important, and that is why they talk about you,” the Bishop said. “It is expected because of your position in today’s Nigeria.”
