Amnesty International Nigeria has accused the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) of retaliating against Rita Ushei, popularly known as Raye, by withholding her discharge certificate despite her completion of the mandatory one-year national service.
In a statement on its official Facebook page, the human rights organisation described the NYSC’s decision as “arbitrary and outrageous,” warned that it reflected a growing intolerance for dissent in Nigeria.
The group said the move may be linked to Ushei’s recent social media criticism of the widespread economic hardship brought about by President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.
“Instead of punishing her for voicing concerns over rampant inflation, the authorities should prioritise addressing Nigeria’s escalating economic woes,” Amnesty International said.
It noted that in March, Ushei faced threats to her life after a viral TikTok video in which she condemned the government’s handling of the economy. The group said that since May 2023, economic measures introduced by the Federal Government have deepened poverty, making it harder for low-income Nigerians to access food, education, and healthcare.
“Holding and voicing dissenting views is not a crime,” Amnesty International stressed. “Authorities must uphold and respect the right to freedom of expression without discrimination.”
The organisation urged the NYSC to immediately reverse its decision and issue Ushei her certificate in line with Nigeria’s constitutional and international human rights obligations.
