A media analyst, Abubakar Yusuf, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to broaden the scope of the Renewed Hope Agenda by increasing the recruitment target for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to 500,000 officers. This appeal comes after the recent announcement of 3,900 vacancies, which Yusuf described as inadequate given the overwhelming number of applicants and the long gap since the last major recruitment exercise.
Speaking on Monday, Yusuf highlighted the importance of scaling up recruitment to boost the NCS’s revenue-generating capacity and provide much-needed employment opportunities for Nigerians. “The current figure of less than 4,000 recruits is not only insufficient but also a disservice to the aspirations of thousands of job-seekers,” he said.
Yusuf urged the Controller General of the NCS, Wale Adeniyi, to engage with President Tinubu and other relevant authorities to ensure the recruitment drive reflects the administration’s commitment to economic growth and job creation.
He also criticized Leke Abejide, Chairman of the House Committee on Customs, for his recent remarks, accusing him of discouraging potential applicants and benefiting from internal replacement exercises. Yusuf called for a more transparent and inclusive recruitment process to restore confidence among Nigerian youth seeking employment in the customs service.
