The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has commended the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas (ANPA) for their consistent efforts in transforming healthcare delivery in Nigeria, as the Association marks its 30th anniversary with a high-impact medical outreach in Lagos and Oyo States.
Speaking during the medical outreach held in the Ikate community of Lagos State, Dabiri-Erewa praised the group of diaspora physicians for their unwavering patriotism and commitment to giving back to their homeland.
According to her, ANPA’s continued efforts are gradually reducing the country’s dependence on medical tourism.
“Even in America, about 70 percent of Black doctors are Nigerians. I believe that through ANPA’s commitment, medical tourism from Nigeria will soon be a thing of the past,Your medical missions have remained impactful over the years. This is commendable and inspiring.”she stated.
The medical mission, organized as part of ANPA’s 30th anniversary celebrations, catered to more than 3,000 residents, offering free treatments for a wide range of health issues including hypertension, diabetes, cancer, gynecological conditions, and more.
Over 350 surgeries were performed, with more than 150 focused on eye procedures, including cataract and glaucoma surgeries. The team also delivered 250 dental procedures and handled complex operations such as hernia and gallbladder surgeries.
More importantly, the initiative extended beyond treatment, as more than 250 Nigerian-based doctors received advanced medical training, enhancing local healthcare delivery.
In her remarks, Dabiri-Erewa described the mission as a symbol of true patriotism.
“What ANPA has done is not just about providing temporary care but about building capacity and strengthening our healthcare system. This is the value that Nigerians in the Diaspora bring to national development,” she said.
ANPA President, Dr. Cliff Eke, said the outreach was a way of celebrating the association’s legacy and re-affirming its commitment to healthcare development in Nigeria.
“Our goals include improving healthcare delivery, advocating policy reform, and empowering future healthcare leaders,” he noted.
Also speaking, ANPA National Treasurer and U.S.-based gastroenterologist, Dr. Lanre Jimoh, said the group is working towards establishing a multi-specialty hospital in Nigeria.
“We want to go beyond periodic missions. Our vision includes a permanent facility focused on prevention, treatment, and continuous training of medical personnel in Nigeria.”
NiDCOM reiterated its commitment to supporting diaspora-led initiatives that contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.
