The Customs Area Controller of Apapa Port Command, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu , has pledged that the Command will always stay ahead of smugglers through intelligence-driven operations and uncompromising enforcement.
Olomu gave the assurance on Monday, August 18, 2025, when he received Dr. Martin Iluyomade, Director of Inspection and Enforcement at the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), who also chair the Federal Task Force on Fake, Substandard Drugs and Unwholesome Food.
He revealed that smugglers’ new strategies, such as fake registration numbers and false declarations, have consistently been uncovered and thwarted by Customs. He stressed that the Apapa Command remained committed to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding between the Comptroller-General of Customs and the NAFDAC Director General to curb smuggling of regulated products.
Olomu also urged NAFDAC to hasten the evacuation of seized containers from the port, noting that prosecuting suspects alongside seizures was critical to dismantling smuggling networks and deterring others. He pointed to the recent interception of 32 containers handed over to NAFDAC as evidence of the strong collaboration between both agencies.
In his remarks, Dr. Iluyomade commended the Command for its uncompromising stance, described the seizures as “life-saving.” He warned that while firearms may kill individuals, fake drugs and harmful foods could endanger entire populations. He further hailed Olomu as “the best Controller Apapa Command has ever had” and affirmed that the awards earned under his leadership were well deserved.
