A prominent faction within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently reshuffle his cabinet, accusing some Ministers of sabotaging government programs and undermining the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, APC League of Democrats, made the appeal in a statement on Monday, signed by its National Coordinator, Hon. Babajide Oyewole, and Secretary, Chief Rowland Okonkwo. They described the cabinet reshuffle as long overdue, calling for the immediate removal of certain Ministers.
“We are seasoned politicians and can read between the lines when appointees are working anticlockwise to sabotage the good intentions and programs of the very government they seem to be representing. This is not the first time, and we would not allow history to repeat itself,” the statement said, referencing past governance challenges under President Goodluck Jonathan.
The group specifically named Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, and Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, urged their immediate removal. They added that Ministers like FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and Works Minister Dave Umahi could remain in their positions, while others be reshuffled to improve efficiency and service delivery.
The statement cited ongoing tensions between the Federal Government and indigenous contractors, highlighting the refusal of the Finance Ministers to implement President Tinubu’s directives to clear outstanding debts totaling N4 trillion owed to local contractors since 2024.
“Such defiance not only sabotages the President’s efforts to revive the economy but also damages Nigeria’s image and discourages potential investors,” the group said. They also referenced recent protests, including hundreds of young lawyers and civil society organizations, demanding accountability over allegations of selective payments by Dr. Uzoka-Anite.
The League warned that continued inaction could affect the APC’s chances in the 2027 elections, urging the President to act decisively.
The call comes amid sustained demonstrations by the Association of Indigenous Contractors of Nigeria, who have blocked the entrance of the Federal Ministry of Finance, protesting unpaid contract sums despite prior interventions by the National Assembly and the President.
