The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected moves by the Rivers State House of Assembly to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, warned that such action could plunge the state into political instability.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the party’s spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC said it was disturbed by what it described as “unfortunate developments” from the legislature.
While acknowledging that the House of Assembly is an independent arm of government with constitutional oversight responsibilities, the party insisted that impeachment should not be deployed as a political weapon, particularly when no serious constitutional breach has been established.
The APC argued that unresolved internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should not be allowed to spill over and threaten governance in Rivers State, noting that such actions could undermine peace and development.
Nwauju said the impeachment threat appeared to be linked to budgetary disagreements, stressed that such issues do not justify the extreme measure of removing a democratically elected governor.
The party recalled that during the period of emergency rule in the state, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu transmitted a ₦1.485 trillion budget to the National Assembly in May 2025. The budget was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, and was designed to run until August 2026.
According to the APC, Governor Fubara is not constitutionally required to present a supplementary budget if the existing appropriation adequately addresses the state’s needs. It further noted that the Constitution allowed a governor to continue spending for up to six months into a new fiscal year.
Describing the impeachment move as lacking legal and moral justification, the APC called on members of the Rivers State House of Assembly particularly lawmakers elected on the party’s platform to resist what it described as external pressure aimed at destabilising the APC-led government.
The party warned that it would take all necessary steps to ensure that governance in Rivers State is not derailed by political rivalries, urging lawmakers to immediately halt the impeachment process in the interest of peace, stability, and democratic order.
