The Nigerian Army has refuted claims that the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, raised alarm over alleged rising cases of pipeline vandalism during his recent operational visit to the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
In a statement issued on 11 January 2025 by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army described the report credited to Sahara Reporters and titled “Nigerian Army Chief Raises Alarm over Rising Pipeline Vandalism in Niger Delta” as misleading, malicious and a deliberate misrepresentation of facts.
According to the statement, the COAS, while addressing officers and soldiers at the Port Harcourt Barracks on Friday, 9 January 2025, only underscored the importance of protecting critical national infrastructure, noting that effective performance of this responsibility would positively impact the nation’s economy. He urged troops to remain disciplined, committed and dedicated to their mandate, while assuring them that their welfare remained a top priority under his Command Philosophy.
Lieutenant General Shaibu also approved immediate interventions to address some of the challenges raised by commanders, including the construction of additional accommodation, renovation of existing quarters and completion of ongoing projects. He further assured personnel that issues relating to quality education for their children were being addressed.
While speaking with journalists during the visit, the Army Chief explained that his presence in 6 Division was part of his routine operational tour to assess troop readiness, interact with officers and men, and identify challenges requiring prompt attention.
The Army emphasized that security indicators in the Niger Delta show significant progress in curbing oil theft and pipeline vandalism, leading to improved security and sustained oil and gas exploration activities in the region.
Colonel Anele cautioned media organisations against publishing unverified reports and urged the public to disregard what she described as futile attempts to undermine ongoing security efforts. She also appealed to residents of the region to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible intelligence on the activities of economic saboteurs.
