The former Vice President Atiku Abubakar through his media office has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of prioritizing attacks on opposition parties over addressing the country’s deepening economic and security crises.
In a statement signed by Mr. Paul Ibe and issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the media office criticized President Tinubu for remarks allegedly made during the 14th meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he reportedly took a swipe at the African Democratic Congress (ADC), described as the opposition’s Coalition platform.
“Attacking the opposition has now become his favourite pastime even while the country burns under his watch,” the statement said. “This constant attack on the opposition is a distraction by a man clearly overwhelmed by the mess in his own house.”
The statement claimed that President Tinubu has failed to address a “broken economy” and unresolved tensions between himself and Vice President Kashim Shettima, while allegedly meddling in internal matters of opposition parties.
Ibe alleged that the presidency has been sponsoring internal crises within opposition parties, including orchestrating divisions among supporters of opposition leaders, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. He said such actions were aimed at weakening the Coalition, which he insisted “stands stronger than ever.”
The Atiku Media Office further accused the Tinubu-led government of weaponizing state institutions such as anti-corruption agencies to harass and intimidate opposition figures. The statement also criticized the President’s focus on a 2027 re-election campaign, claiming he has failed to deliver meaningful governance since assuming office in 2023.
“While Nigerians grapple with worsening insecurity, hunger, and poverty, Tinubu is busy playing petty politics. He has abandoned governance and is fixated on 2027, despite having nothing to show for his 2023 mandate,” the statement added.
The media office warned that efforts by the President to force Nigeria into a one-party system would be resisted, stating that Tinubu fear the strength and unity of the Coalition.
