Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis, described the late pontiff as a shepherd of the vulnerable and a relentless advocate for a more united world.
In a condolence message he personally signed and issued from Abuja on Monday, April 21, 2025, Atiku extended heartfelt sympathies to the Holy See, the Catholic Church in Nigeria and across the globe, and the entire Christian faithful.
“The departure of Pope Francis marks the end of an era defined by humility, moral courage, and an unwavering commitment to the service of humanity,
“He was a trailblazer who dared to walk where no one had gone before—a shepherd of the most vulnerable who worked for a better and united world”Atiku stated.
He described Pope Francis as a leader whose voice echoed the cries of the poor and whose actions offered hope to those marginalized by society. “His papacy was a bridge of compassion in a time of division, a balm of grace in a wounded world,” the former Vice President added.
Atiku also reflected on the symbolism of Pope Francis passing on a holy day for Christians, calling it “a solemn and divine punctuation” that speaks to the sacred nature of a life spent in service to others.
“To Catholics in Nigeria and beyond, and to the Christian community worldwide, I share in your sorrow and stand with you in prayer,” he affirmed.
He concluded by praying for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul and encouraged all to uphold the late pontiff’s legacy of compassion, unity, and peace.
