The Senator who represents Kano Central in the Red Chamber, Senator Rufai Hanga has stated that, Kano have been endowed with a lot of natural resources that if well harnessed can feed the Nation and beyond.
The Senator said there was no state in Nigeria that has more dams than Kano State, which when properly utilised will feed the Nation all year round.
This he said while leading the debate on a bill for an act to establish the federal university of agriculture Kura, Kano State which passed second reading on Tuesday.
According to him, the bill is meant to address the educational needs of the people of Kano State, also to serve as training ground for the development of agriculture in the Country in general.
With population explosion in Nigeria expected in the nearest future, he posited that, there will be high demand for agricultural product from human as well as the industrial sector.
The Federal University of Agriculture, Kura when established will contribute to accelerated agricultural growth rate, enhance farmers’ income and generate employment in the sector”he argued.
Speaking about the location of the University in Kura, he said that no sane person will reject such an institution in his locality hence it is meant to engender development, give the people a sense of belonging and bring government closer to the people.
“The federal university of agriculture Kura, when establish, will develop and offer academic and professional programmes leading to the award of Diplomas, First Degrees, Postgraduate Research and Higher Degrees with emphasis in Planning, Adaptive, Technical, Maintenance, Developmental and Productive skills in Agriculture.
“It will also act as agents and catalysts, through postgraduate training, research and innovation for the effective and economic utilization, exploitation and conservation of Nigeria’s natural, agricultural, economic and human resources”the Senator added.
