The Niger state Governor, Umaru Bago has approved N80,000 as minimum wage for civil servants in the state.
The farmer Governor disclosed this shortly after meeting with the Organised Labour in the State at Government House, Minna.
He assured that the payment would be for both the State and the Local government Civil Servants, effective from November, 2024, added that the Committee on the Minimum Wage will work on the consequential adjustments.
The farmer Governor further assured that the N80,000 is sustainable, especially with the State’s strides in Agriculture.
He therefore called on Civil Servants in the state to embrace Agriculture as Civil Service farms would be created to make them productive.
Meanwhile,Chairman,Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, Niger State Chapter, Comrade Idris Abdulkarim Lafene expressed delight with the State Government’s approval of N80,000 New Minimum wage described Niger State as one of the top ranking States to implement the new minimum wage.
Comrade Lafene described the decision of the State Government as a step forward, added that the union look forward to an improved offer.
He appreciated the Farmer Governor over the development, stated that the union had tabled between N70,000, N75,000 and N80,000 as Minimum Wage for the State
The development made Niger State the highest-paying state among the nineteen northern states in the country.
It was reported that several governors in the Southern part of Nigeria have also approved new minimum wage for their workers recently after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the minimum wage bill into law, increasing workers’ baseline pay from N30,000 to N70,000.
On Thursday, the Governor of Enugu State,Peter Mbah approved N80,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the state.
On Wednesday, Umo Eno, Akwa Ibom Governor, announced a new minimum wage of N80,000 for civil servants in the state.
On October 16, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced that the minimum wage for public sector workers in the nation’s commercial capital would be N85,000.
Two days later, Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, approved N85,000 as the minimum wage for civil servants in the state.
