BREAKING: NYSC DG announces rescue of last corps member in a set of 8 prospective Corps members abducted in 2023

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed has announced the rescue of a prospective corps member, Solomon Daniel Bassey, who was among the 8 prospective corps members abducted in August 2023 on their way to NYSC camp in Sokoto.

The DG announced rescue of the Corps member at a press briefing on Friday at the NYSC Headquarters, Abuja.

He said Solomon Daniel Bassey,the last corps member in a set of eight abducted prospective Corps members was rescued on August 22,2024.

General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed expressed his deeply appreciation to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their combined efforts towards the scheme throughout the rescue mission.He also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and members of the press.

He further restated the scheme’s zero tolerance to night journey and unauthorized journeys for Corps members, warned Corps Members and prospective ones alike to always prioritise their personal security; stated that the Scheme shall never relent its responsibility of upholding the security and welfare of Corps Members at all times.

Two among the rescued Corps members;Emmanuel Esudue, a graduate of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, from Akwa Ibom State University, and Victoria Udoka, a graduate of Mass Communication from the University of Uyo took turns to share with journalists,their experiences while in Terrorists’ captivity

Recall that eight corps members were kidnapped by suspected terrorists on their way to camp in Zamfara State on Monday, August 21, 2023.

The prospective corps members were travelling in an Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) bus from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Sokoto State, for the one-year mandatory national service, when their vehicle was intercepted by the terrorists.

Although there were reportedly 11 corps members and the driver in the bus, three of the corps members escaped during the attack.

The eight corps members were abducted alongside the driver.

Nigeria security agencies which included Nigeria Police Force and the Army had organised a search party for the kidnapped corps members.
