The National Police Council on Monday officially confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The confirmation was conveyed by President Bola Tinubu during the council’s meeting at the State House, Abuja, which lasted about 40 minutes. Following this endorsement, Disu’s name will now be forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, told PUNCH, “Yes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP.”
The meeting commenced at approximately 2:15 pm with the arrival of President Tinubu and was held in line with the Police Act 2020, which mandated the Police Council to formally consider such appointments.
Disu, 59, has been serving in an acting capacity since last Wednesday following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, who cited “family issues” as the reason for stepping down.
Attendees of the council meeting included Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Head of Civil Service Didi Walson-Jack, several state governors, and relevant federal ministers.
The Police Council is chaired by the President and comprised all 36 state governors, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the IGP.
The public is now eager to see the changes IGP Disu will implement to strengthen the effectiveness and integrity of the Nigerian Police Force.
