The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Taiwo Oyedele as a minister in the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The confirmation followed a voice vote by lawmakers during plenary on Wednesday, after the nominee was screened by the Senate. Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the decision after senators cleared Oyedele at the Committee of the Whole.
Oyedele is expected to serve as Minister of State for Finance, replacing Doris Uzoka-Anite, who has been redeployed as Minister of State for Budget and National Planning.
During his screening, which lasted more than two hours, senators questioned the nominee on fiscal reforms, revenue generation and Nigeria’s economic outlook before approving his nomination.
Speaking during the session, Oyedele described his nomination as a call to national service at a critical moment for the country’s economy.
“With over two decades of experience working with national governments, multilateral institutions and global corporations, my journey across the private sector, academia and public policy has focused on fiscal governance and economic transformation,” he said.
He also thanked President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, noting that the opportunity to appear before the Senate was an honour.
Before his nomination, Oyedele served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system. The reforms culminated in the introduction of a new tax regime that took effect on January 1, aimed at boosting revenue generation, improving the business environment and attracting both domestic and foreign investments.
The appointment is expected to strengthen the Federal Government’s fiscal policy framework as Nigeria seek to address economic challenges and expand revenue sources.
