Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu has officially assumed duty as the 23rd Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), succeeding Brigadier General YD Ahmed.
Until his recent appointment, Brigadier General Nafiu served as the Chief of Staff to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General OO Oluyede, a position he also held under the late Lt. General TA Lagbaja, CFR.
A member of the 47 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, Nafiu holds a Master of Strategic Studies from the prestigious US Army War College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and a Master of International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He also earned a BSc in Geography from NDA.
With a solid background in organizational policy formulation, structure management, and administration, Brigadier General Nafiu has served as Deputy Director, Establishment, Deputy Director, Staff Duties, and Assistant Director, Procurement at the Army Headquarters.
His wealth of experience spans several leadership roles, including Military Assistant to Principal Staff Officers at the Army Headquarters and Aide de Camp to the General Officer Commanding 2 Division of the Nigerian Army. He also served as Aide de Camp to the Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) between 2005 and 2008 and later as a United Nations Military Observer in Sudan, actively participating in the South Sudan Independence Referendum in 2011.
Brigadier General Nafiu’s experience in peacekeeping missions across Liberia, Sudan, and South Sudan has honed his skills in multicultural and complex environments. His earlier stint as NYSC Camp Commandant in Kaduna State in 2008 makes his return to the Scheme a familiar terrain.
As a graduate of the Indian Army War College, Army War College Nigeria, and the US Army War College, where he later served as a Directing Staff (Instructor), Brigadier General Nafiu brings to the NYSC a robust portfolio of leadership, administration, and strategic thinking.
His appointment is expected to further enhance the operations of the NYSC Scheme in line with its mandate of fostering national unity and youth development.
